My dog dobby, is almost doing the same thing right now, though he's more on his tummy then his side Though he likes his tummy rubs!

yeah, think it's males. Winky hates being on her back, unless she's itchy, and she does it herself, and she'll be on her back, and she'll almsot convulse or something, shaking to get rid of the itch. If she's not the one that got her on her back, she will fight to get out

Mine is female, and she's always rolling over, so I can give her tummy rubs.
When she was a puppy, I put her on her back and held her down until she quit fighting. I had to do that several times. It's one way to establish who is alpha over whom. LOL I am her alpha, and she knows it. I can take food out of her mouth, bone or anything, and she won't fight me over it.
